Renowned jewellery designer recognized for having his pieces worn by the most coveted people of the fashion and music industries, Ara Vartanian has already conquered Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Liv Tyler, Blake Lively, besides guitar player Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards and singer Madonna – in 2016 chosen by Billboard magazine as Woman of the Year – in that occasion, she opted for Ara Vartanian’s jewellery to receive the award: the powerful Rubellite Double-Finger Ring with black inverted and white Diamonds, an unique piece from the brand, which was highlighted on the most important social media of the world. “I have a way to express myself that speaks to several types of people. From the Stones to Kate Moss, which includes a classic lady in her 60s arriving dressed in a tailleur“.
With the opening of his store in Mayfair, London, the designer has attracted even more looks to his brand, which was his biggest goal: “I am showing that yes, there is luxury in Brazil”.
It all started some years ago, on the day that he decided to make a ring for a gem, while still working as a gem buyer at his father’s company, and then understood what his métier would be. As told by him to the journalist “The buying of precious stones involves emotion”. Ara also compares himself to a chef that seeks ingredients. His search is for stones. He buys the gems with a wholesaler look and claims he never knows, necessarily, what he will do with them. All the structure of his pieces is created around the stone. They are handmade, numbered and many are unique, the designer reveals. About his idea to use a Diamond on its inverted position, it started with himself wondering why no one has ever thought to use it that way, turning the Diamond upside down with its pointed end upwards. Besides the daring of creating pieces like this, Ara is always leading his permanent quest for comfort and anatomy. It is the case with the Articulated Rings or Double and Triple-Finger Rings, which allow the placing of large precious stones.
Regarding his other passions, assembling and disassembling of vintage cars and motorcycles, the designer says that “this activity serves the purpose of clearing my mind. There are times when I arrive at an impasse over creating jewellery and need to clear my head. The change of focus necessary to restoring a motorcycle, for example, helps me to do that and forget the momentary frustration”.
